Track review: Last Dinosaurs – ‘Domino’
It has been two and a half years since we last heard from Last Dinosaurs with 2015’s Wellness, and six since they reached the ARIA top ten with In a Million Years. But now the Brisbane boys are back and ready to unleash more, this week releasing new single ‘Dominos’.
The track had been teased via the band’s social media accounts for a number of weeks before debuting on Triple J’s airwaves on Tuesday evening.
It’s a tune that’s part homage to their influences, and part original Dinos. The guitar riffs and picks featured throughout are eerily reminiscent of debut album hits ‘Zoom’ and ‘Honolulu’, while the electronic influences call back to ‘Wurl’ and ‘Apollo’ from Wellness.
This familiarity will please longtime fans, while enough new elements are featured to suggest their creativity is heading in new directions.
With Brisbane’s indie rock scene at the height of its power with the likes of Ball Park Music and Jungle Giants to name a few, the re-appearance of Last Dinosaurs tells us we ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
