Review: Tkay Maidza at Jack Rabbit Slims, Perth, 7 September 2018

Adelaide rapper and singer-songwriter Tkay Maidza performed a spectacular show at Perth’s Jack Rabbit Slims on September 7 as part of her Flexin’ tour.

The national tour is off the back of her recently released single of the same name featuring US rapper Duckwrth. She had plenty of fresh material to perform with her latest EP Last Year Was Weird (Vol. 1) released on August 31.

Jack Rabbit Slims was the perfect venue for the night, small enough to provide for an intimate atmosphere, but large enough to hold the crowds that Maidza pulls. She really brought something to the set design, the stage littered with gold trophies that had ‘Tkay Maidza Flexin’ Tour’ inscribed on the plaque.

Kicking off the night was Perth rapper Arno Faraji, who was the first hip-hop artist to win Triple J’s Unearthed High competition back in 2017. A fantastic set, he hyped the crowd up with tracks like ‘Destiny’s’ and ‘Bless (What It’s Like)’. Following Arno Faraji’s set was Sydney rapper Kwame, who really got the crowd going with ‘NO TIME’ and ‘WOW’.

The crowd was already chanting Maidza’s name before she arrived on stage, clearly hyped from the supports. Maidza kicked off the set with her song ‘Big Things’ pulled straight from her latest EP, a track in which she teased in previous performances this year. Highlights of her performance were ‘M.O.B.’, ‘Switch Lanes’, ‘Do It Right’ and ‘Simulation’.

Maidza’s set even included a bit of crowdsurfing during which she took time to high-five some lucky fans at the front of the crowd. She brought Faraji and Kwame back on stage to join her for her final song, ‘Flexin’’ in which Kwame and Arno Faraji covered Duckwrth’s vocals, but really brought something new to the song.

Tkay Maidza always brings heaps of energy to her performances, and this one was no different. An immensely talented rapper with superb production.
