Missy Higgins to debut new material with orchestral concert series
Missy Higgins will debut new material when she and her band join forces with some of Australia’s most talented classical musicians for an orchestral concert series in late 2016.
The series kicks off at the State Theatre in Sydney on November 3, with several outdoor shows planned as well.
The Melbourne singer-songwriter has augmented iconic hits like Scar, The Special Two, Where I Stood and Everyone’s Waiting with parts for trumpets, violins and a long list of other instruments.
“I’ve had lots of invitations to play shows with orchestras over the years but I always said no to them,” Higgins said.
“I guess when I was younger I was just intimidated by the challenge of reworking my songs on that scale. Then last year I got asked to do a show with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. I’ve always liked new challenges so I figured that was a perfect opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone and try something different. It was an amazing experience.”
Higgins said orchestral arrangements brought songs to life “in new and unexpected ways” so she wanted to do it again in other parts of the country.
Perth fans attending Higgins’ Kings Park show will get a special treat with Brisbane’s indie darlings george joining the bill for one show only. george recently reformed for their first live show in over 11 years.
Melbourne Folk artist Ben Abraham will also perform.
“I know it’s not the first time that a contemporary musician has teamed up with great orchestras in this way but other than that one time in Tassie this is the first time for me so I’m really looking forward to it,” Higgins said.
“It’ll be something very different and hopefully something very special.”
