Melbourne artist LA. Faithfull counts down her top 5 music videos of all time
Melbourne singer-songwriter LA. Faithfull recently released her new single Heart Back, a gut-wrenching pop track with a raw, expressive video to go with. To celebrate, we asked her to give us the lowdown on her favourite music vids of all time – and boy, are there some classics here.
1. Michael Jackson – Thriller
There aren’t many words other than ‘genius’. Thriller is like a short film, and I love that Michael took so much pride in telling such theatrical stories in his videos – a true artist in every sense of the word. I mean, the thing goes for 13 minutes! It’s epic. Plus any dance that then gets used years down the track by prisoners as their daily workout routine must be good.
2. Joe Cocker – With a Little Help From My Friends (Live at Woodstock 1969)
This video makes me cry every time. I wish I had been at Woodstock. There is something so true and honest about it, I feel like I’m watching Joe Cocker’s soul onstage, the way he feels every single word with every ounce of his body is just gut-wrenching. It’s not perfect but it’s way more emotion than most people can summon. If I can only be this honest onstage It would be a dream come true. Do yourself a favour and watch it.
3. Hanson – MMMBop
I had a serious Hanson obsession as a kid and every time I see this video I smile. Sometimes I just put it on and turn it up really loud! And when I say I had a Hanson obsession, we are talking my whole bedroom was covered – every square inch was Hanson posters and merchandise. I still wear the original MMMBop T-shirt sometimes.
4. Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
What can I say? This was one of the first songs that I heard and thought, ‘I want to be a singer and sing like that!’ I remember putting it on and singing into my hairbrush while watching Video Hits every single Saturday morning. My poor parents! And who could forget that scene from The Bodyguard of goofy Kevin Costner leaping into the lake after his love? Iconic.
5. Coldplay – The Scientist
Firstly, what a song. The melody is possibly the most beautiful melody I’ve ever heard. It just makes me feel so sad, it’s just stunning. The whole video is in reverse and I love the link to the lyrical content – “Let’s go back to the start”. It’s such a clever play on the words through the filming. I also think it’s pretty amazing that Chris Martin learnt the vocals backwards. It’s insane!
