Exclusive premiere: Tom West debuts video for new single ‘Got It Cheap’
Adelaide singer-songwriter Tom West recently released the single ‘Got It Cheap’ from his upcoming album, continuing his journey across the rocky and undulating ground between simple, whimsical folk tunes and grand and moody soundscapes.
The track now has its own music video, which West is premiering exclusively right here on Music Insight.
It’s been nearly a year since we last hear from West – a year he’s spent rewriting and re-recording songs he has been working on since 2016.
The upcoming album was composed over two years, influenced strongly by the sudden and traumatic death of West’s father and mentor.
Set for release later this year, the album was recorded between a makeshift studio in the Adelaide Hills, in his home, and in Nashville, where it was mixed and co-produced by Collin Pastore (Lucy Dacus).
‘Got It Cheap’ is a reflection on the disposability of the routines modern life, imagined during dream-like walks through the Australian suburbia. Banjo plays off against West’s old Stratocaster before the song collapses into riffs and swells into unexpected changes.
West’s live shows shift between performing solo or with his band where banjos, saxophones and guitars create a beautiful ramshackle of sound which has drawn comparisons to The Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, and Ben Howard.
For those who want to get a dose of West’s purposeful songwriting and intricate arrangements in person, he’ll be playing a few upcoming shows in Melbourne and Adelaide before jetting off for a tour of the USA.
