Exclusive premiere: Matt Garrod releases debut single ‘We’re on a Ship’
Perth indie singer-songwriter Matt Garrod will unveil his exquisite debut single ‘We’re on a Ship’ this Thursday, and because he’s that kind of guy, Garrod is giving an exclusive sneak preview right here on Music Insight.
The emotionally-charged track is the first single from Garrod’s highly anticipated Canyons EP, due out early next year, and features lush vocals accompanied by a simple combo of an old piano and snare drum.
Beautiful orchestral builds and ambient guitar lines round out the track, which was produced in WA by James Newhouse (The Waifs Ironbark).
“‘We’re on a Ship’ began as a frustration I had about losing sight of the things that are genuinely important in life due to an unnecessary hunger for ‘looking the part’ and the need to remain on-trend,” Garrod told us.
“I intended for the dynamics in the track to demonstrate capture the frustration and relief through orchestral/ambient melodies and choppy, unorthodox drum patterns.”
‘We’re on a Ship’ is the first of five tracks on Garrod’s Canyons EP, due out early next year.
He’s no stranger to the indie-pop scene with his band Oak Tree Suite having opened for Evermore on their 2014 Hope Tour and getting a bit of airplay on the Js. Oak Tree Suite drummer Joshua Lindley also features on ‘We’re on a Ship’.
Garrod tested the waters as a solo artist when he quietly released ‘Bad Memory Blaze’ in 2014. The single made it to the semi finals of the International Songwriting Competition that year and was on the soundtrack to indie film The Right One.
To celebrate the release of ‘We’re on a Ship’, Garrod will play a one-off live show at The Sewing Room on Saturday 12 May.
