Mitchell Martin

Introducing Mitchell Martin

Young Bunbury musician Mitchell Martin will release his debut album Into the Light on March 26.

The 19-year-old has spent the last three years writing and recording the record, which he’ll launch with a regional tour starting at the Ravenswood Hotel on March 23.

Martin told Music Insight he was excited to get on the road.

“I have a great set of shows and support acts lined up and I’m very excited to do my first ever regional tour as the headline act,” he said.

“I hope I can bring as many people down as possible to watch and support new live local music.”

Martin recently moved to Perth to study a degree in Music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and said he’d been hooked on music since his first guitar lesson at age 13 – but singing didn’t always come naturally.

“This was my first introduction into music and I fell in love with it immediately,” he said.

“Throughout high school I got into multiple bands where I wanted to be the lead guitarist, however it was always hard to find a singer so I ended up stepping up to the plate and when I was 15 I began singing and have been doing lessons ever since.”

Martin names Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes as major influences and it’s easy to see why when he talks about his songwriting process.

I always perform with a loop station where I record keys, guitar, electronic drum beats, synths and vocals and loop them to create a full band sound,” said Martin.

“When I’m writing I will write with the loop station and write out the parts for all of the main instruments you hear on the track. This has been a really useful tool for me as it really lets me take control in the sound I’m wanting for the whole track and it makes the recording process a lot faster as we have the main parts all ready to be recorded already.”

With his first album not even out yet, Martin already has his sights set on album number two.

“Once I’m done with my regional tour and album launch I’m going to begin writing the second album,” he said.

“I am expecting to do the same as last time and release singles and EP’s while writing this album and keep working on writing better songs and getting better at performing the songs live. I want to perform more around Perth and get to play at bigger venues and festivals and just keep working on getting better at my craft. I would love for people to just really enjoy my music.”

You can catch Martin performing at venues around WA’s southwest in coming weeks.
