Single review: Taylor Swift – ‘Look What You Made Me Do’
Taylor Swift: the victim no more.
Exposed, and finding her pristine pop princess image corroding after the likes of Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian revealed her evil ways – like any good fairytale villain, Swift retreated and hid away while she conjured up her revenge.
And now, little miss Regina George in sheep’s clothing is back in full Regina mode, albeit with a glorious myspace twist.
Look What You Made Me Do finds Taylor no longer pressing her tongue against her cheek like she did in 2014’s Blank Space. Now, her tongue is out and she’s hissing like the snake she was labelled to be.
A bratty cheerleader taunt delightfully decorated with a production any emo band circa 2005 would approve of, it’s the Ashlee Simpson and Panic! at the Disco collaboration you never knew you wanted.
There’s a well established path of sneering kiss-off anthems in the pop-rock realm, from Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl to Lindsay Lohan’s First, and Swift recalls those tracks to full effect; her delivery every ounce as bitter as you’d want it to be.
She’s unapologetically embracing the monster she was rumoured to be, and damn does it sound good.
