Review: Bootleg Rascal at Solbar, 29 April 2017
Since making a name for themselves back at Woodfolk Festival in 2013, Bootleg Rascal have climbed from strength to strength, and they brought their With You single tour to a bustling Solbar last Saturday night.
Support act came in the form of local Sunshine Coast band Mufassa. They had the audience tapping feet and shaking hips with their vibrant tunes in what was a perfect warm up for the headliners.
“Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the show,” Bootleg Rascal vocalist Carlos Lara cheekily grinned as the band secured their places on the stage.
The beat dropped, and guitarist Jimmy Young ripped into his guitar with total enthusiasm. Lara electrified the crowd with his tantalising vocals to the melody of Head in the Clouds, and the audience was in full swing when the band launched into their hit Oh I Know.
The band were all too happy to hand out high fives to the punters at the front while swinging off the stage equipment, and the crowd attempted to respond in kind with a few crowd surfing attempts, not that they managed to get very far.
Good vibes stayed high as they performed their newest single With You, which dropped in early April, and they rounded off the performance with an unreleased song named Coming, which is expected to be part of the band’s forthcoming studio album.
As the trio walked back stage and engaged in some group photos, the crowd chorused with ‘One more song! One more song!’
They were granted their wish. Laughter erupted as drummer Jack Grey hunched down and rolled out onto the stage with the other band members following after him. Bootleg Rascal gave us all a wave and were straight into the last song of the night, My Good Friend.
It was a wonderful way to end a great evening of live music. The band invited the crowd to party on into the night, and after such an enjoyable performance, they were all too happy to oblige.
