Verge Collection wins $5000 Australian Touring Grant
Perth indie rockers Verge Collection have won the $5000 Tapped By Otherside Australian Touring Grant, helping them on their way to a national headline tour.
Formed in 2015, Verge Collection have attracted local and national attention with beautiful and distinctly West Australian pop vignettes reminiscent of The Triffids and The Panics.
Following the release of their single Our Place and subsequent Class Of 09 EP, the band is due to release its debut album later this year.
The touring grant will help the band undertake its first national tour in August (see dates below).
Frontman Ben Arnold said Perth had a great music scene but the cost of touring interstate was prohibitive for many artists.
“Touring nationally when you’re based in Perth is always costly and a lot of bands aren’t lucky enough to be able to do it,” he said.
“This Tapped grant will help us so much by underwriting a massive expense and help us get our music to an east coast audience. A lot of businesses talk a lot about supporting live, original music in WA – it’s great to see one putting its money where its mouth is.”
Otherside’s Julian Tompkin congratulated the band, saying they were “worthy winners” and well positioned to take their career to the next level.
“They’ve got the charm, the chops and the conviction, and we’re proud to be supporting them,” said Tompkin.
Other acts shortlisted included POW! Negro, Jacob Diamond, Hideous Sun Demon, Lucy Peach and Peter Bibby.
Tompkin said the response to the inaugural grant was encouraging.
“For us it’s always been about genuinely supporting local creative talent in a meaningful way, and we look forward to announcing the next round of Tapped grants in the very near future.”
The awarding of the Australian Touring Grant comes after Fremantle group Koi Child were awarded the International Development Grant ($2,500) in March to help the band travel to SXSW in Texas.
